by Jessica Polko In mid-January, the Angels signed OF-S Jeff DaVanon to a one-year, $950,000 contract. The deal also includes incentives based on plate appearances and games played. He reportedly will receive $30,000 when he makes his 350th plate appearance or plays in his 110th game, $25,000 upon his 400th plate appearance or his 120th game, and $20,000 following his 450th plate appearance or 130th game. Last season DaVanon played in 108 games while making 337 plate appearances. While back trouble shortened his 2004 season, he may not receive much more playing time in 2005, since Los Angeles owns considerable depth at his positions and he sports a large platoon split that indicates he probably should sit against southpaws. DaVanon possesses impressive plate discipline, solid power, and substantial speed, so the 31-year-old should provide the Angels with considerable production even in a limited role.
