by Jessica Polko Yesterday, Cleveland signed RHP Jake Westbrook to a two-year, $7.5M contract that includes a $350,000 buyout on a $5.6M option for 2007. The deal sets the 27-year-old's salary at $2.9M in 2005 and $4.25M in 2006. If Westbrook pitches 180 innings in 2005, the buyout increases to $600,000. Once he pitches 200 innings in 2006, the option price jumps to $5.8M, and if he reaches 210 IP, the option skips to $6.1M. Westbrook does not strike out a high ratio of batters, but he demonstrated solid control in 2005 and does an excellent job of keeping the ball on the ground. The quality of the Indians' infield defense will impact the groundball pitcher's effectiveness, however I expect him to provide Cleveland's rotation with a steady anchor over the course of this contract.
