by Jessica Polko Colorado signed both OF-R Dustan Mohr and UT-S Desi Relaford to one-year, $1.05M contracts in early January. Mohr demonstrated substantial improvement with regards to his plate discipline in 2004, and I look forward to seeing how he will perform with the Rockies. As a flyball hitter, the 28-year-old should benefit from the quirks of Coors Field. However, Colorado may want to use him more against right-handed pitchers than against southpaws due to his splits. Right field in Colorado belongs to OF-L Brad Hawpe, but following the 25-year-old's major league performance last season, the Rockies are not planning on handing the position to him until he proves ready. Whether Hawpe opens the season at AAA, playing part time in the majors, or starting likely will depend upon his spring training performance. Mohr will receive whatever playing time Hawpe does not fill and also possesses the defensive capability to cover center if OF-R Preston Wilson encounters further knee trouble.
