by Jessica Polko During Rotohelp's November break, Philadelphia hired Charlie Manuel to replace Larry Bowa as Manager of the Phillies. Bowa managed competently for his first couple of seasons with Philadelphia but failed to move the team over the hump when they added talent for a run at the division title. Manuel enters this position with substantial prior experience. The chart below provides an overview of the 61-year-old's baseball career: Year Position Organization 1969-75 Major League Outfielder MIN/LA 1982 Scout MIN 1983 A Wisconsin Manager MIN 1984-85 AA Orlando Manager MIN 1986 AAA Toledo Manager MIN 1987 AAA Portland Manager MIN 1988-89 Major League Hitting Coach CLE 1990-92 AAA Colorado Springs Manager CLE 1993 AAA Charlotte Manager CLE 1994-99 Major League Hitting Coach CLE 2000-(7/11/2002) Major League Manager CLE 2003-04 Special Assistant to GM PHIManuel has demonstrated a tendency to run fairly freely with players who possess speed. He also worked his aces hard. During his first stint as a major league manager, Manuel battled serious health problems. However, the Phillies believe he's physically capable of handling the strains of managing. Having worked in the organization for the past two seasons, he already possesses a familiarity with the players. Of course, both 1B-L Jim Thome and OF-L Kenny Lofton played for him in Cleveland. I'm not particularly impressed by Philadelphia's choice, but the Phillies could have made a worse decision.
