by Jessica Polko St. Louis activated LHP Steve Kline from the disabled list on September 29th, hoping to gauge whether he will be prepared to pitch in the first round of the playoffs. In late September, the Cardinals revealed that while a groin strain prompted his trip to the DL the flexor tendon in the index finger of Kline's left hand is approximately 70% torn. Kline feels able to pitch through the pain created by the injury given the short time he's normally on the mound, however controlling his pitches is more difficult. Considering St. Louis possesses solid alternatives, I do not believe the Cardinals should include Kline when his reliability is questionable. If the club desires a second lefty, Rick Ankiel should suffice. Kline plans to undergo surgery following the season to repair the damage and should be ready for spring training.
