A Vance Warning

by Jessica Polko

The Mets continued to expand their roster throughout September, calling up Vic Darensbourg, Victor Diaz, Aaron Heilman, and Joe Hietpas after their initial round of September additions. New York even activated Kaz Matsui and Jose Reyes from the DL last week, but the team also lost both Matt Ginter and Vance Wilson for the remainder of the season in mid-September.

Wilson injured his left hand when Kevin Correia hit him with a pitch during the Mets' August 21st game in San Francisco. He played through the injury for over a week before seeing a hand specialist, who identified a problem with the ligament above his middle knuckle. Wilson was still able to catch without overwhelming pain, but he was not able to grip a bat effectively. The 31-year-old remained with the team for a couple of weeks with the thought that he might be able to contribute as a defensive replacement. However, on September 14th he underwent surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his left hand. He hopes to resume swinging a bat in November, so he should be healthy well before spring training.
