by Jessica Polko Baltimore initially activated OF-L Larry Bigbie and DH-S David Segui from the disabled list while calling up C-R Geronimo Gil when rosters first expanded. The Orioles then called up OF-R Darnell McDonald, RHP Rick Bauer, RHP Aaron Rakers, LHP Matt Riley, and RHP Eddy Rodriguez after the AAA regular season ended. Bigbie displayed no lingering problems with the groin injury that cost him the last two weeks of August and resumed his role as a starting outfielder. Segui only participated in five games before swelling in his left knee caused him to return to the disabled list on September 13th. His chronic physical problems may lead him to retire this off-season. Gil will compete with C-R Robert Machado this month for the limited at-bats available to C-R Javy Lopez's back-up. Baltimore drafted Rakers out of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville with a 23rd round pick in 1999. After spending most of the last three seasons at AA Bowie in the Eastern League, this year the reliever pitched for AAA Ottawa in the International League, compiling an 80:25 K:BB with 65 H and 8 HR allowed in 78.2 IP for a 2.75 ERA over 54 appearances, including one start. While the 27-year-old's age disqualifies him from most prospect discussions, a solid performance this month and in spring training could earn him a regular middle relief job with the Orioles in 2005.
