by Jessica Polko Minnesota dealt OF-R B.J. Garbe to Seattle for Pat Borders on August 31st. The Twins drafted Garbe out of high school with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 1999 draft. He spent the remainder of that season at Elizabethton on the Rookie-level Appalachian League before advancing to A Quad City in the Midwest League in 2000. Following two seasons at A+ Fort Myers in the Florida State League, Garbe reached AA New Britain in the Eastern League in 2003 only to lose most of the season to a wrist injury. At the time of this trade, he was hitting .201 with a .283 OBP and .278 SLG on 75 H, 20 2B, and 3 HR with a 39:69 BB:K and 12/20 SB% in 374 AB at AA New Britain this year. The 23-year-old clearly needs to accomplish more to prepare himself for the majors, but his plate discipline appears promising, and as he matures physically he's showing more power. His base running instincts also need improvement. Given Minnesota's glut of outfielders, I can understand the Twins' willingness to part with Garbe, however he is a high upside acquisition for Seattle.
