by Jessica Polko Cincinnati placed Sean Casey on the disabled list on July 4th. Casey strained his right calf while running to first base in the seventh inning of the Reds' June 27th game against Pittsburgh and did not appear in a game between that night and his move to the DL. Rather than risk having the injury drag into the second half of the season, Cincinnati decided to let him rest up through the All-Star Break. As a member of the NL All-Star team, Casey plans to attend the festivities in Houston even if he is unable to play. The Reds called up Corky Miller to fill the roster spot opened by Casey's trip to the DL. Adding Miller gives Cincinnati the option of playing one of their other catchers at first base. The Reds primarily have used Adam Dunn and Javier Valentin to cover for Casey, scattering the extra at-bats around the roster. On July 3rd, Cincinnati placed Mike Matthews on the disabled list. Matthews underwent surgery yesterday to remove bone chips from his elbow, so he will be out four to six weeks. Ryan Wagner returned from AAA to take Matthew's roster spot.
