by Jessica Polko Pittsburgh placed 1B/OF-L Daryle Ward on the disabled list yesterday. Ward sprained the ulnar collateral ligament in the thumb on his right hand while playing first base during the Pirates' June 25th game at Cincinnati. The injury evidently occurred Jason LaRue hit a grounder to third and then collided with Ward's glove hand while Ward was attempting to field a throw from Rob Mackowiak. Ward may be out anywhere from three to eight weeks. Pittsburgh has not released a timetable for his recovery.
