by Jessica Polko Minnesota placed Shannon Stewart on the disabled list on May 21st, though the move was retroactive to May 18th. Stewart missed the Twins' May 15th game in Chicago due to heel pain and then left their May 17th game early when he aggravated the injury. Reports indicate Stewart has a 25 percent tear of tissue, likely his plantar fascia ligament, on the bottom of his right foot. He was originally diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot. The 30-year-old's foot has been in a walking cast for the last week, and he may continue to wear that cast for at least another week if he does not improve, as rest is considered the most effective treatment. Minnesota wants to try to allow the injury to fully heal for fear that the problem could linger and trouble Stewart for the remainder of the season if not dealt with now. Consequently, he will be out until at least late June and may not return before the All-Star break. Meanwhile, Luis Rivas hit the disabled list with a strained groin on May 22nd. The move was retroactive to May 19th, so Rivas will be eligible to rejoin the team on June 3rd. While his strain was not considered severe, the Twins may want Rivas to test his groin with a short rehab assignment before he returns since such injuries are easily aggravated. Therefore, I expect the 24-year-old to come off the disabled list sometime in the next week to ten days barring a setback.
