by Jessica Polko San Diego placed LHP David Wells on the disabled list on May 18th. Wells severed a tendon in his right wrist and cut the palm of his left hand in an accident at his home on the evening of May 16th. According to Wells, he tripped over a heavy wrought iron barstool as he was turning to chastise a friend for slapping him on the back of the neck. When he fell head first over the stool, he reportedly knocked a bottle of wine off the counter. Presumably, he cut himself on the broken pieces of that bottle and the glass he was holding. Yesterday, Wells underwent surgery to repair the tendon, which is commonly removed as replacement tissue when pitchers undergo Tommy John surgery. While he needed stitches for the cuts on his pitching hand, the club is not concerned about that injury interfering with his performance. He is on the disabled list to allow his right wrist time to heal to the point where he can comfortably wear a glove and hold a bat. The Padres believe he will be able to rejoin the rotation as soon as he is eligible to return from the disabled list on June 1st.
