by Jessica Polko Anaheim placed Troy Glaus directly on the 60-day disabled list on May 18th. After a recent MRI revealed additional damage in the right shoulder Glaus injured last July, he agreed earlier this week to undergo surgery on his right shoulder. The Angels evidently believe the new damage occurred when Glaus dove for a ball on the Minnesota turf on April 30th, though after the incident reports indicated he had hurt his left shoulder. Yesterday, Glaus underwent surgery on his right shoulder to repair a torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum. While it seems regrettable that Glaus did not undergo surgery once the Angels were out of contention last season or even during the off-season, he evidently was advised to pursue rehab and avoid surgery if at all possible. Since surgery is not always a sure fix and can lead to problems with scar tissue, that advice is understandable. Unfortunately, the delay likely will cost Glaus the rest of the 2004 season. Anaheim has not committed to a timetable for his return, and he may try to rejoin the team before the end of the season to improve his position on the free agent market, but I will be quite surprised if he is back before September. Prior to hitting the disabled list, Glaus was experiencing a career year with surprising power for someone with a shoulder injury.
