by Jessica Polko Randy Johnson threw a perfect game yesterday, accomplishing a level of pitching excellence that only has been achieved on sixteen prior occasions in major league history. Starting for the Diamondbacks, Johnson sent the Braves' hitters to the bench 27 consecutive times. This level of brilliance seems only natural from a pitcher, who ranks fourth among pitchers in major league history in career strikeouts and has five Cy Young awards. At 40, he is the oldest pitcher to ever accomplish the feat. In 1990, he threw a no-hitter against Detroit, so this game also makes Johnson one of only five pitchers to throw no-hitters in both leagues.
