by Jessica Polko Baltimore placed David Segui on the disabled list on April 30th. Segui began missing games due to soreness in his left knee two weeks ago and when the pain increased to the point where he regularly was out of the lineup, the Orioles decided to place him on the DL. Segui's undergone three prior surgeries on the knee, but there's no clear surgical solution to his current pain. The 37-year-old still plans to try to rejoin the team after resting, but Baltimore has not set a target date for his return, and this condition is considered career threatening. The Orioles called up Darnell McDonald to replace Segui on the roster. Baltimore drafted McDonald out of high school with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 1997 draft. Darnell is the younger brother of Donzell McDonald, who is currently playing in the Mexican League though he has appeared in the majors with the Yankees and the Royals. The Orioles moved Darnell slowly through the organization, but he's been at AAA for most of the past three seasons. McDonald possesses decent plate discipline and solid speed but only marginal power skills. At the moment, the 25-year-old appears to be in a platoon with B.J. Surhoff that has Jay Gibbons shifting to DH against left-handed pitchers.
