by Jessica Polko On Friday, Boston placed RHP Ramiro Mendoza on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder. Mendoza missed most of spring training due to an abdominal strain, but he was able to recover in time to make the Opening Day roster. However, he reported stiffness in his shoulder on April 8th. The team played a 13 inning game that evening, and when he wasn't feeling better the next day, the Red Sox decided the club couldn't afford to be short a reliever when their bullpen was already tired. Consequently, Boston placed Mendoza on the DL and called up LHP Mark Malaska. An MRI over the weekend did not reveal any structural damage, so the 31-year-old will rest and then begin a strength and conditioning program. The Red Sox do not want Mendoza back until he's ready to pitch effectively, so he likely will make a rehab stop in the minors before rejoining the club, which probably means he won't return until May.
