by Jessica Polko New L.A. General Manager Paul DePodesta's first trade with his former boss, Oakland General Manager Billy Beane, hardly qualifies as a blockbuster. Yesterday, the Athletics' dealt Jose Flores to Dodgers for cash. While most dismissed the trade as an inconsequential acquisition of organizational depth, Flores minor league performances indicate he possesses the ability to contribute to the major league team. Last season at AAA Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League, Flores hit .273 with a .377 OBP and .332 SLG on 101 H, 12 2B, 2 3B, and 2 HR with a 62:48 BB:K and 16/18 SB% in 370 AB. Although he obviously lacks power, the 30-year-old's speed, on-base skills, and position flexibility make him an intriguing bench option. He's capable of covering all positions with the exception of catcher.
