by Jessica Polko Pittsburgh agreed to a one-year, $2.575M contract with Kip Wells earlier this week. Wells needs a solid defense behind him to avoid an excess of baserunners, as he doesn't possess strong control skills, but he's proven an effective starter for the Pirates. The improvement the 26-year-old has shown with regards to his walk rate in the second half of the past two seasons indicates he possesses the ability to emerge into a top of the line starter over the next few years. However, I tend to support Pittsburgh's decision not to lock the first year arbitration pitcher into a longer deal at this time.
