by Jessica Polko Last week, Cincinnati signed John Vander Wal to a one-year, $700,000 contract. The Reds wanted to add a lefty to their heavily right-handed bench, though several of their starters are left-handed hitters. Vander Wal hasn't received much experience hitting against lefties over the past few years, but the 37-year-old is quite proficient against right-handed pitching. He should serve the Reds well over the first half of the season. Cincinnati should then deal him to a contender for an infusion of developing talent in July.
