by Jessica Polko Yesterday, the Cubs swept their double-header against the Pirates while Houston lost to the Brewers, making Chicago the NL Central division winners. To supplement their quest for the championship when rosters first expanded, the Cubs called up Hee Seop Choi, David Kelton, Sergio Mitre, Augie Ojeda, Josh Paul, Felix Sanchez, and Todd Wellemeyer while activating Mark Grudzielanek from the disabled list. At the end of the first week, the club also activated Dave Veres from the DL. Chicago placed Veres on the DL August 27th. Jon Leicester temporarily replaced Veres on the roster, but he returned to the minors a few days later as the Cubs manipulated their playoff roster possibilities. While the Cubs were spraying champaign, the White Sox were in Kansas City playing a game with no barring on any playoff race. The White Sox called up Jon Adkins, Aaron Miles, Jose Paniagua, and Armando Rios while activating Billy Koch from the DL when rosters expanded this month.
