Mora Isn't Always Better

by Jessica Polko

Baltimore has done little to expand their roster this September. While they've activated UT-R Melvin Mora, 2B-R Jerry Hairston, and LHP Omar Daal from the DL, the only call-up the Orioles have made was to bring Pedro Swann to the majors on Monday.

Mora began having problems with his right hand after being hit by a pitch in late June. He aggravated the injury in late July and began to miss games, so on August 5th Baltimore placed him on the disabled list. After a month of rest and rehab, he came off the DL when rosters first expanded in September.

He was back and doing alright until last week when he injured his left knee, running into the right-field wall while attempting to make a catch in the Orioles' September 13th game in Toronto. Tests revealed a partially torn MCL, and while doctors believe he won't need surgery, he's expected to refrain from running for at least six weeks. Consequently, he won't be ready to resume play until after the season is over.

Baltimore called up Swann to compensate for losing Mora. Swann hit .280 with a .388 OBP and .411 SLG on 117 H, 21 2B, 2 3B, and 10 HR with a 35:73 BB:K and 4/10 SB% in 418 AB with AAA Ottawa in the International League this year.

Hairston shot past the projected recovery time for his broken foot by over a month and wasn't even back to full speed when the Orioles activated him from the DL on the 4th. After returning, he missed additional games due to a bone bruise he developed on the big toe of his right foot while compensating for his previous injury. Hairston's played regularly in the last week, but despite a rehab assignment he seems rusty. Baltimore just wanted him to log some time before the end of the season; he won't attempt to steal any bases until next year.

Daal came off the disabled list on the 10th and has made one relief appearance since then. He's now scheduled to make a start on Friday. While he's reportedly recovered from his arm problems, I don't expect him to experience much more success than he did earlier in the season as the Orioles' defense isn't in a position to protect him from allowing an abundance of hits.
