by Jessica Polko The Mets placed SS-S Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list on September 5th and moved him to the 60-day DL a week later. Reyes sprained his left ankle sliding into second base in the ninth inning of New York's August 31st game against Philadelphia. While he might have been able to return three weeks after suffering the injury, allowing him to play the final week of the season, the Mets rightfully see no reason to rush him back to a team no where near the playoff race. Provided he makes it through winter ball without further mishap, he should report to Spring Training fully healthy. Moving Reyes to the 60-day DL facilitated the call-ups of 1B-L Mike Glavine and OF-L Matt Watson, who both needed spots on the 40-man roster. The younger brother of Mets' pitcher Tom Glavine, Mike Glavine's professional baseball career began when the Indians drafted him out of Northeastern University with their 22nd round pick of the 1995 draft. However, he failed to impress, and in 1999, Cleveland dealt Mike to Atlanta for future considerations. The Braves released him in May of 2001 at which point he signed with a team in the independent Atlantic League, where he played through 2002. This spring the 30-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Mets and spent the season at AAA Norfolk in the International League, where he hit .266 with a .357 OBP and .420 SLG on 45 H, 11 2B, and 5 HR with a 25:36 BB:K in 169 AB. Although he's maintained a solid walk rate throughout most of his career, Glavine has never put together the contact rate and power necessary to secure a major league job given his limited position flexibility. New York doesn't have a lot of playing time available at first, so Mike's unlikely to rack up many at-bats this September, as he wouldn't be in the majors if the Mets weren't trying to do something nice for Tom. I suspect he'll make his major league debut as a pinch hitter and then maybe appear in a couple more games before the season is out. Edwin Almonte, Jaime Cerda, Danny Garcia, Jeremy Griffiths, Orber Moreno, Prentice Redman, and Jorge Velandia all joined the Mets when rosters first expanded.
