Requena for a Dream

by Jessica Polko

Cleveland completed a small deal with the Dodgers yesterday. The Indians sent OF-S Alex Requena to L.A. for RHP David Lee in order to add some depth to their pen and protect their young arms this September.

Requena reported to Mahoning Valley in the Short-season New York-Pennsylvania League after signing with Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela in July of 1998. He spent 1999 with A Columbus in the South Atlantic League and then split 2001 between A Columbus and A+ Kinston in the Carolina League. Following a full season at A+ Kinston in 2002, this season Requena hit .180 with a .245 OBP and .240 SLG on 27 H, 2 2B, 2 3B, and 1 HR with a 10:39 BB:K and 6/9 SB% in 150 AB at AA Akron in the Eastern League. The 23-year-old displayed a strong walk rate early in his minor league career and has a history of high stolen base totals. However, he's not adjusted well when advancing through the system, and therefore doesn't appear to possess the batting skills necessary to utilize his speed. Unless Requena begins to demonstrate more offensive prowess in the upper levels of the minors, I doubt he'll ever crack the majors. I definitely don't see him contributing to the Dodgers this year or next.
