Bittner Sweet

by Jessica Polko

As one of the more active teams on the trade market this season, the White Sox couldn't let the deadline pass without completing one more deal. On July 29th, Chicago sent Gary Glover, Scott Dunn, and LHP Tim Bittner to Anaheim for Scott Schoeneweis and Doug Nickle.

The White Sox drafted Bittner out of Marist University with their 10th round pick of the 2001 draft. He split the remainder of that season between Bristol in the Rookie-level Appalachian League and A Kannapolis in the South Atlantic League. Bittner then spent a full season at Kannapolis last year. While he displayed promise as a starter at Kannapolis last year, the White Sox again sent him back to start the 2003 season. When he finally received a promotion to A+ Winston-Salem in the Carolina League, Chicago moved him to relief. Although he's experienced some control difficulties, I believe Anaheim should attempt to use him as a starter at their A+ affiliate for the remainder of the season before limiting him to relief.
