by Jessica Polko Arizona placed Tony Womack on the disabled list June 28th. Womack left the Diamondbacks' game in Detroit that night in the fifth inning. While fielding an A.J. Hinch grounder, Womack injured his left knee and fell to the grass. Reports vary on whether he suffered a minor sprain to his MCL or none at all. His current problems supposedly are the result of an Osteochondral defect. He'll undergo exercises to strengthen the cartilage in his knee over the next three weeks, but he should be able to avoid surgery. The Diamondbacks activated Shea Hillenbrand from the disabled list to fill Womack's roster spot. Hillenbrand injured himself less than 10 days after Boston dealt him to Arizona, straining an oblique muscle during the Diamondbacks' June 8th game against Cleveland. However, the team didn't believe the problem was serious, so he didn't hit the DL until the 17th. He was wrapping up a rehab assignment when Arizona called him to take Womack's place. As Hillenbrand returned somewhat quickly from this injury, he may have some lingering trouble or suffer a setback in the next month, but the Diamondbacks will try to be careful of him.
