by Jessica Polko Boston signed RHP Todd Jones to a major league deal yesterday. Colorado failed to trade Jones in the spring when several teams displayed interest in the reliever. Last week in a fit of impatience, the Rockies designated him for assignment and subsequently released him. Jones has pitched solidly with a 28:18 K:BB over 39.1 IP, but the club's porous defense and the rarified Denver air combined to saddle him with 61 H and 8 HR for an 8.24 ERA. I believe he should pitch effectively for Boston. In order to make room for Jones on the roster, the Red Sox designated Hector Almonte for assignment. Almonte joined the team in early June when Boston traded Matt White to Seattle.
