by Jessica Polko Pittsburgh placed Matt Stairs on the disabled list May 22nd, retroactive to May 19th. Stairs reportedly tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right index finger swinging at a pitch during the Pirates May 18th game in Arizona. Surgery is not considered necessary to correct this problem. The affected digit will be taped to an adjoining finger to immobilize it while he waits for it to heal, though it will be treated as well. No timetable has been announced for his rehab process, but I suspect he'll be out between four and six weeks, as Pittsburgh likely will want him to spend at least a week on a rehab assignment.
