Kevin Millwood pitched the first no-hitter of the season yesterday, one year after Derek Lowe threw his no-hitter. According to ESPN, April 27th is tied with July 12th and September 20th as the day of the year when no-hitters are most commonly thrown. Each day has witnessed six no-hitters. Millwood accomplished the feat at Veterans Stadium against the Giants.

Millwood completed his impressive performance in 108 pitches. He struck out ten, including Barry Bonds looking. Ray Durham, Jose Cruz, J.T. Snow, Jesse Foppert, and Pedro Feliz also struck out looking, with Durham doing so twice and Feliz also striking out once swinging. Yorvit Torreabla was the only member of the Giants' starting lineup not to strike out during the game, as both Marquis Grissom and Rich Aurilia both went down once each swinging. Millwood threw seventy-two pitches for strikes

Aurilia, Bonds, Cruz, Torrealba, and Foppert all had one fly out apiece, while Snow flew out to center twice and Grissom three times. Bonds also popped out once. Torreabla grounded out once, as did Cruz and pinch hitters Neifi Perez and Marvin Benard. Torreabla also hit a line drive into center.

There was never any question of a potential perfect game, as Ray Durham led off the first with a walk, though he then was caught stealing. Durham walked again in the ninth, while Aurilia took a base on balls in the forth, so Millwood faced 29 batters.
