UnSecure Cellular Field

by Jessica Polko

Yesterday's White Sox/Royals game should have focused on the division favorites attempting to prevent Kansas City from starting towards another winning streak, like the 9 game run with which the Royals opened the year. Unfortunately, Chicago fans set out to show the Royals that last season's attack on Kansas City first base coach Tom Gamboa wasn't the isolated incident everyone believed.

While there was an awareness that this was the Royals first game in Chicago after last September's shameful episode, no one was overly concerned about a similar event occurring. We had the television tuned to another game while working at our computers, so we were unaware of the first three times fans ran onto the field. While at ESPN.com, Tim saw a headline that made him flip to see if Chicago was really, yet again, facing disgrace at the hands of another dim-witted drunk. Of course, we were treated to a view of a man in a powder blue shirt running onto the field and attempting to bring first base umpire Laz Diaz to the ground.

When Gamboa was assaulted first base Umpire Matt Hollowell backed away from the situation, luckily the Royals players protected Diaz as one of their own, although he appeared Diaz hold his own against the attacker even before right fielder Brandon Berger arrived to aid him. Several other Royals and White Sox security personnel soon joined Berger, and it was clear that unlike last September the assailant would leave the park in worse shape than the intended victim.
