Most of the remaining free agents will likely accept minor league deals and non-roster invitations to Spring Training. However, we've endeavored to match a dozen of them with the teams where they'll have the best chance of finding playing time and helping a team.
Free Agent: Tony Clark will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 30
Occupation: Switch Hitting First Baseman
Offers: Clark has displayed strong plate discipline and decent power skills in the past and could rebound quickly.
Negatives: The only aspect of his skills Clark improved last season was his contact rate. In addition to his general decline, he also developed a severe platoon split, suggesting he should give up trying to hit right-handed. Consequently, the odds of a comeback don't look great.
Best Matches: Montreal should try to sign him to a minor league deal without a lot of incentives. Despite his upside, I'd send him to AAA to start the season unless he had a hot Spring Training. However, he might find as much playing time waiting for a Mike Sweeney trade in Kansas City.
Free Agent: Chuck Finley isn't sure what he wants in a relationship, as he's entangled in a nasty divorce.
Age: 40
Occupation: Left-handed Starting Pitcher
Offers: Despite his age, Finley's remains a dominant and effective pitcher and is a much better catch than Kenny Rogers.
Negatives: His personal issues have made it uncertain whether he intends to return to baseball in 2003.
Best Match: He should have accepted St. Louis' offer of arbitration or one of their contract offers. Now the Cardinals won't be able to use him until May if they re-sign him, though they could still really use a starter of his caliber.
Free Agent: Ron Gant will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 37
Occupation: Right-handed Outfielder
Offers: Gant possesses solid plate discipline and power skills, making him a worthy reserve outfielder. His skills are particularly sharp against left-handed pitching.
Negatives: His speed has basically disappeared with age, which also leaves him injury prone and will likely begin to affect his other skills. Most teams will want to use their roster spots for players with more upside.
Best Matches: Gant should try to see if Tampa Bay is interested. However, he could always re-sign with San Diego and remain in the minors for the first month of the season.
Free Agent: Rickey Henderson will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 44
Occupation: Right-handed Outfielder
Offers: Rickey still has excellent patience at the plate, as well as mild power and speed skills. Rickey also gives teams a chance to partake in a Hall of Fame career.
Negatives: Rickey's old and not improving.
Best Matches: Many teams should welcome the chance to have Rickey around as a tutor to their other players and a useful bench player. Both Florida and Toronto come to mind as teams that might show interest. We also know of a Brewers' season ticket holder who'd be very happy if Rickey would come teach plate patience to Alex Sanchez.
Free Agent: Chuck Knoblauch will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 34
Occupation: Right-handed Corner Outfielder
Offers: His skills appear in tact, so he could return to his 2000 form.
Negatives: The uncertainty that caused him to move away from second base due to his throwing problems appears to have affected his confidence and production at the plate as well; the quality of his contact has decline significantly.
Best Match: The Rangers could use some additional outfield depth, though their major league roster appears full for Opening Day.
Free Agent: Ray Lankford will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 35
Occupation: Left-handed Corner Outfielder
Offers: Lankford offers a solid walk rate with minimal speed and power.
Negatives: His contact rate leaves him vulnerable to sudden decline.
Best Matches: Milwaukee, Atlanta, or Kansas City might be interested in adding Lankford for depth.
Free Agent: Kenny Lofton would like a one-year commitment.
Age: 35
Occupation: Left-handed Outfielder
Offers: Lofton offers solid plate discipline, power, and speed.
Negatives: His skills noticeably declined in 2001, and although he made a nice comeback that could easily happen again at his age.
Best Matches: Lofton seems likely to land in Pittsburgh, but Tampa Bay needs him significantly more.
Free Agent: Doug Nickle will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 28
Occupation: Right-handed Reliever
Offers: Nickle's occasionally demonstrated decent dominance at AAA.
Negatives: He's yet to prove himself in the majors and still needs considerable time at AAA to work on his control.
Best Match: Nickle should try to sign with the Yankees as they almost certainly would allow him to spend the season at AAA.
Free Agent: Jose Offerman will likely accept a minimal commitment.
Age: 34
Occupation: Switch Hitting First Baseman and Corner Outfielder
Offers: Offerman possesses solid plate discipline and mild speed and power skills.
Negatives: His skills don't add up to a high level of production.
Best Match: Offerman is likely within Montreal's price range and could help their bench. They'd also likely give him the playing time to potentially improve his standing on next year's market.
Free Agent: Robert Person would like a one-year commitment.
Age: 33
Occupation: Right-handed Starting Pitcher
Offers: Prior to his injury, Person was a dominant starter and he could return to that status by the end of the year.
Negatives: Person is returning from August shoulder surgery, so he likely won't be 100% until a few months into the season. He's also had some control problems in the past, which might resurface after his time off.
Best Match: Tampa Bay could use a veteran starter and likely wouldn't mind a slow start.
Free Agent: Kenny Rogers is seeking a serious multi-year relationship.
Age: 38
Occupation: Left-handed starter
Offers: Rogers still possesses solid control, which allows him to provide a team with quality innings when he's healthy, and he remains quite potent against left-handed batters.
Negatives: Rogers' never high strikeout rate continues to decline as he ages. His age also puts him at risk for injury, and though he'll likely be able to relieve for a few years after he's done as a starter, a team likely won't receive value for their money in a multi-year deal.
Best Match: The White Sox would be a strong match, but Rogers is evidently seeking more money than they want to offer.
Free Agent: Reggie Sanders would like a one-year commitment but will probably accept less.
Age: 35
Occupation: Right-handed Outfielder
Offers: Sanders possesses moderate power skills and solid speed.
Negatives: Sanders has never had a very good contact rate and his walk rate has dropped. His skills are declining, but the decay seems to be happening at a fairly slow rate for the moment so he should be decent for at least another year.
Best Match: If they don't sign Lofton or trade for Raul Mondesi, Sanders would be an option for the Pirates with Brian Giles moving to centerfield. Depending on how little he's willing to accept, he could also do quite well in Montreal.
