by Jessica Polko The winners of the fan vote for the All-Star starting lineup and the manager selections for 29 of the 30 roster spots were announced yesterday. However, fans will vote for the final member of each team from a list of five provided by Joe Torre and Bob Brenly. Before we discuss those choices, let's first look at the players on the teams. 30th Man Candidates The two truly bad choices on this team are Robin Ventura and Rob Fick; neither one deserves the honor over more qualified candidates. Torre selected Fick as Detroit's representative when Jeff Weaver is a better selection and allows more roster flexibility. I have no objections to the other five Yankees on the team, but Ventura does not belong. Eric Hinske has performed better than Ventura this season and should be on the team, and Eric Chavez also has played better this year. Additionally, Torre selected Ventura over Bernie Williams, another Yankee who should be in Milwaukee since he's the fourth best outfielder in the league. John Olerud's absence even as an option for the 30th man is a glaring omission. Without the option of Olerud, Jim Thome is the de facto choice for the last roster spot. We almost chose Konerko when we selected our rosters, and after another hot week, he's definitely earned his spot on the team. Unfortunately, that leaves Ordonez hanging due to other poor decisions. Carrying all the shortstops is interesting, but at least one should have been put on the fan list. Torre should have known that Jeter could make it on in a vote. I was pleased with the selection of Barry Zito. In his interview with ESPN, Torre said that Zito was on the ballets of all the other managers, which negated his negative feelings over pitchers starting on the Sunday before the game.

30th Man Candidates I had many more problems with Brenly's roster than with Torre's, though the Yankee manager is now selecting his fourth straight AL team and fifth opportunity in the last six years. The fans handicapped Brenly by selecting an undeserving player to his starting lineup in Scott Rolen, as Rolen does not merit a spot on the team this year. However, Brenly added several mistakes, starting with carrying two back-up catchers and choosing too many relief pitchers. We had difficulty selecting one additional catcher and selecting two merely demonstrates indecision. It is not a position overflowing with talent. Leaving off Brian Giles in favor of Mike Williams is inexcusable given Giles' performance this season as one of the top five offensive players in the NL. Giles beats out the other candidates for the 30th roster spot. With Rolen forced upon him, I can understand leaving Ryan Klesko off the team in favor of Trevor Hoffman, but it still wasn't the best call. Klesko would likely have declined for health reasons anyway, allowing Brenly to name another player. The presence of John Smoltz eliminated Andruw Jones from the roster, though I'm more understanding of the decision as a managerial preference since both are performing very well. Although Brenly selected five of his own players, I again only take issue with one selection. Luis Gonzalez should have been left to the fan vote. His inclusion over others, like Giles and Klesko, was a poor choice. Bartolo Colon should have received more consideration as he's one of the best pitchers in baseball this season and truly was robbed of his All-Star appearance by the trade. Vicente Padilla was also needlessly snubbed, although he can blame the fans for including two of Padilla's Philadelphia teammates. I was very pleased to see Adam Dunn and Odalis Perez on the team, as they certainly belong over Danny Graves and Kaz Ishii, and I also strongly agreed with his selection of two Brewers, both of whom merit selection. Jose Hernandez should have been voted in as the starter, but with Rollins starting, Hernandez is an absolute necessity. Both managers should have a chance to rectify some of their choices as they replace players who decline the invitation due to injury or other personal reasons. I'll likely take a look at the final vote, All-Star replacements, and starting pitchers after the game.
