Our Philosophy |
by Tim Polko Schedule recommendations for teams with 6 games
Good for hitters / Good for pitchers
Good for hitters / Bad for pitchers
Bad for hitters / Good for pitchers
Bad for hitters / Bad for pitchers
Pitchers with 2 starts to deploy only in leagues that don't count qualitative stats:
Given our starting pitching injuries and the fact we want to keep Papelbon deployed as much as possible, strikeouts and wins increasingly look like problems for us. To remedy that situation, we're purchasing John Lackey today for his double and then expect to buy C.C. Sabathia next Sunday, only skipping Dan Haren next week since Haren faces Sabathia and then heads to the Bronx. However, we still expect to buy Haren by the first full week of the second half barring a remarkable turnaround on our pitching staff. The newly-injured A.J. Burnett will make room for Lackey on this team.
SP(6) Lackey joins hopeful doubles from Santana, Sheets, and Peavy. Papelbon remains deployed, and then Webb seems the best bet since we lack the cap room for Smoltz, expect a suspension for Young, and like Webb's skill trends better than those of Halladay and Felix. Despite the similar risk of suspension for Matt Capps, we want to bench Ryan Dempster with the Cubs headed to Texas and The Cell and therefore hope we at least get three games from Capps. Wright returns to the lineup for Manny, who spends the week in Atlanta and San Diego while possibly even sitting a day or two in the NL parks. Howard remains active despite facing left-handers in Cleveland in the hope that he mashes St. Louis pitching over the weekend. Morneau, heading to Shea and then Florida, stays on the bench, as do Bard, Hall, and Baldelli.

SP(6) Since Santana, Hudson, and Lincecum appear at least reasonably likely not to double, we're leaving them on the bench in favor of taking Haren and Sabathia to join Peavy, Lackey, Hamels, and Papelbon. Alex Rios and Hardy replace Youkilis, who likely will cede at-bats to David Ortiz in the NL parks, and Upton, who heads to our bench thanks to his delayed DL trip. The resurgent Kelly Johnson also subs for the struggling Howie Kendrick while McCann mans the water cooler for everyone else.

With offense remaining a serious issue here, we're dumping the useless Chris Iannetta for Victor Martinez, who addresses our primary needs of power, runs, and batting average more than Russ Martin. We also trust Martinez's skills and don't mind spending the extra cap cost for an established bat at catcher.
SP(6) Santana and Beckett seem similar, so Beckett will deploy for cap reasons along side Sheets, Peavy, Haren, Felix, and Papelbon. Victor subs for Bard due to the latter's flu-like symptoms, though with Howard facing three southpaws in Cleveland, Hafner deploys for Howard, along with the hot Hall, who replaces Manny. Upton and Baldelli stay benched until we see a replacement that we want to use immediately.

We also will add John Lackey here, dumping the injured A.J. Burnett.
SP(6) Lackey joins doubles from Peavy, Hamels, and hopefully Sheets. Due to cap reasons, Sabathia and Papelbon will claim the last two spots over Santana, who might not post a ton of points even if he doubles. Wright and Teahen return to the lineup after we missed about sixty points from them. Upton and Howard hit the bench, with the latter missing time due to his trip to Cleveland. Mauer, Drew, Bonds, and Baldelli also stay benched, but to get under the cap, Chris B. Young replaces Adrian Gonzalez while Kinsler subs for Brandon Phillips given the latter's potentially worrisome HBP today.

National League owners should seek to deploy as many Cubs, Reds, Rockies, Astros, Dodgers, Phillies, and Pirates as you own given that six of those clubs spend the week in AL parks with an extra lineup slot available while the Rockies play the Yankees at home and then go to Toronto. Conversely, exercise caution when deploying relievers or marginal starters on any of those teams.
