Today's Fantasy Rx
Welcome to our weekly LPR rankings, our primary method of identifying highly skilled and/or consistently effective pitchers. While we have not changed this system since last season, feel free to refer to this key for a complete description of the codes. We have included the five most recent 2006 QA scores for each starter, along with the 10 most recent QA scores for each reliever, tabulating all data through August 3rd. Pitchers with no QA scores have not pitched this year, so do not roster any of them unless you see someone ready to return to the majors.
1
AXax - Francisco Liriano(43444)
ABX - Jeremy Bonderman(42434)
AB - John Lackey(45044)
Justin Verlander(45352)
With slight decreases in skill from both Liriano and Verlander, combined with both pitchers missing their respective starts this week, Bonderman and Lackey stand alone atop the pile of safe AL starters. If continued domination by either Liriano or Verlander remains key to you winning your league, look to deal for pitching help immediately.

Don't expect Cory Lidle to match the success enjoyed by Shawn Chacon or Aaron Small last year, however he at least appears a good choice in leagues where you need wins and can afford mediocre qualitative stats.

Joe Nathan's pitching great, possibly better than at any point in his career. Yes, the relative lack of saves also annoys us, but I see no AL closer clearly preferable to the Twins' veteran.

Santana, Carpenter, Peavy, Lackey, and Haren all look great, and while we like most of our other options, we need Schilling for cap reasons. Putz similarly replaces Street for similar reasons, especially with Seattle facing Oakland.
Victor and Encarnacion then stay glued to our bench while Patterson and Swisher replace Burrell and Hafner due to the latter pair's respective weekend road trips to Shea and Comerica.

Today's Fantasy Rx: With Mariano Rivera guaranteed to finish his career a Yankee, only Brian Meadows appears a likely free agent among current AL closers, making Seth McClung a good pick-up for rebuilding clubs. Among AL free agent middle relievers, Octavio Dotel, Keith Foulke, LaTroy Hawkins, and Guillermo Mota all could land in late-inning roles by spring, though only Dotel and Foulke appear particularly well-suited to succeeding if awarded closer's duties.
