Our Philosophy |
by Tim Polko Welcome to our weekly LPR rankings, our primary method of identifying highly skilled and/or consistently effective pitchers. While we have not changed this system since last season, feel free to refer to this key for a complete description of the codes. We have included the five most recent 2006 QA scores for each starter, along with the 10 most recent QA scores for each reliever, tabulating all data through June 21st. Pitchers with no QA scores have not pitched this year, so do not roster any of them unless you see someone ready to return to the majors.
Realistically, I see no difference between Santana and Liriano right now, other than the fact that Santana's more experience and Liriano faces a much higher injury risk. Plus, of course, that face that Liriano ranks as a far safer overall option given he owns a ground-fly rate roughly double that of Santana.
23abcxyz - Mariano Rivera(5445544255)
Yes, we doubted Felix Hernandez earlier in the year, and yes, we were wrong. His skills edge closer to his 2005 marks every week as he again looks like the second coming of Dwight Gooden.
3bcyz - Julian Tavarez(3343425442)
abcyz - Kiko Calero(4545454344) If Papelbon stumbles or succumbs to injury due to the more frequent workload, Timlin could nab several quick saves. Don't let him remain on you free agent list if you see him available.
Bedard's stock continues to increase, and frankly, so does the value of the other three pitchers here. Strongly consider targeting one of this quarter of underachievers if looking to add another starter. Scott Downs(3500344243)
Za - Joe Kennedy(3043242450)
Both Burgos and Dessens appear calmed down after Buddy Bell's seemingly insane switch last month. The former just might continue closing after Mike MacDougal returns in a week or two.
While no longer a particularly safe option, Crain's improved consistency should keep him rostered in most standard leagues. Among pitchers with far more immediate upside, Rafael Soriano only missed a top ranking due to his weak ground-fly rate, and if anything happens to Putz, his stock will skyrocket. He belongs on some team's roster even in relatively shallow mixed leagues.

QA score for relief outings: up to 5 total points, one for each statistical goal, to any reliever who retires at least one batter and fulfills any of the following skill qualifications: K>=IP, BB=0, H<=IP, HR=0, and G-F>=1.00. Any reliever who doesn't reach any of the required statistical goals or fails to retire a batter earns a 0 QA score. Scores of 5 and 4 qualify as DOMinant outings, a 3 is DULl, and anything below 3 ranks as a skill DISaster. Starters must pitch in five games before earning any of the following DOM or DIS ratings; relievers must appear in no less than 10 games before earning DOM/DIS consideration. All pitchers are evaluated as relievers aside from those who reached both 5 starts in a given season and qualified for DOM or DIS ratings.
A - QA score of 4 or 5 in at least 50% of 2006 starts
X - QA score below 3 in no more than 20% of 2006 starts
a - QA score of 4 or 5 in at least 50% of 2006 relief outings
x - QA score below 3 in no more than 20% of 2006 relief outings
SP(6) Vazquez and the Sox represent scarier opposition than Rogers and the Tigers, so Oswalt will sit. Street returns for Mike Gonzalez. We lack the cap room for Pujols, and also don't really want him this weekend in Detroit. Willingham similarly sits until he proves his good health, and Edwin Encarnacion stays stuck on the DL. However, with the Rockies at home and the Rangers in Colorado, Mark Teixiera rejoins the lineup, shifting Patterson to the OF and leaving both Chone Figgins and Jason Bay on the bench, the latter heading to the unforgiving Dodger Stadium for the weekend.
