'04 NL Outfielder Week: Day Four

Today's Fantasy Rx

Per popular request, I will continue to provide all of the player information tables for these articles even if I still need to complete comments for some batters.

National League Outfielders without Positive Draft Value

Quick Key to the tables:
AB = At-bats.  H = Hits.  BA = Batting Average.  HR= Home Runs.
RBI = Runs Batted In.  SB = Stolen Bases.  R = Runs.  B = Bats.  T = Throws.
Pos = Position qualification based on 20 appearances or max. # of games in 2004.
Age = Player's Age as of October 1, 2004.
4x4 = BA, HR, RBI, and SB in 12-team, $260 leagues with 23-man rosters.
5x5 = BA, HR, RBI, SB, and R in 12-team, $260 leagues with 23-man rosters.
RAR = Runs Above Replacement; Adjusted RAR = RAR modified to
consider a player's 2004 defensive rating in Scoresheet fantasy baseball.

Players are ranked in order from the highest draft value in a 4x4 league to the lowest. As the majority of fantasy leagues allow you to keep anyone traded to the other league, all players are listed in the league where they began the season.

Jeff Duncan151.0670132O
NY Mets4x45x5RARAdj. RAR
Age: 25B:L    T:L-2-2-2.3-2.3

Duncan again landed back at AA Binghamton(EL), compiling a .256/.367/.316 performance in 133 AB towards the end of the season after a first-half split between New York and AAA Norwich(IL), where he held a .256/.332/.342 line in 199 AB. While he remains a patient hitter with intriguing speed skills, negligible power and a questionable contact rate limit his immediate upside. I neither envision Duncan breaking camp in the majors nor emerging as a fantasy factor this year.

Jacob Cruz14733.224328022O
CIN Reds4x45x5RARAdj. RAR
Age: 31B:L    T:L-2-1-6-6

Registering a little over a full AAA season with a .975 OPS earned Cruz an April promotion to the Reds, but he failed to remain a productive player due to a poor BA and limited power. Re-signing a minor league deal with Cincinnati keeps him as the Reds' sixth outfielder, so he again should see some time in the majors, but nothing in his statistical history suggests he should emerge as more than viable roster filler.

87.ABHBAHRRBISBRPos
Chris Magruder8921.236210011O
MIL Brewers4x45x5RARAdj. RAR
Age: 27B:S    T:R-2-2-2.6-3.4

Magruder's .272/.335/.413 performance in 305 AB for AAA Indianapolis(IL) apparently convinced the Brewers to keep him in the minors despite unimpressive big league numbers. Despite decent skills, his overall production demonstrates little speed, power, or plate discipline, and with a proliferation of interesting options in the upper minors for Milwaukee, Magruder shouldn't see much more time in the majors. Don't expect him ever to earn more than a couple bucks at most in any season.

'04 NL Outfielder Week continues tomorrow, featuring Minor League Free Agent and AAA/AA Outfielders in the National League East.

Today's Fantasy Rx: The true sleepers here look like Marlon Byrd and Abraham Nunez, who might emerge as starters this season or even open the year in the minors yet both own $20 upside, largely due their quantitative potential. Dave Krynzel and Jason Dubois rank as the other potential Opening Day starters, but since both the Brewers and Cubs possess equally interesting alternatives in Brady Clark and Jerry Hairston, treating Krynzel and Dubois as more than endgame sleepers is a bad idea barring significant spring training developments. Other prospects worth at least monitoring include Corey Hart, Ryan Church, and Josh Kroeger, but after off-season investments in veterans by each prospect's team, none of this trio even looks like decent mid-season trade bait unless an injury or trade unexpectedly creates playing time that allows their minor league performance to translate into big league success.
