2004 Hitting: NL Season Surplus
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Arizona: Juan Brito, C
32/162 for .198/.241/.278 with 2 HR, 11 RBI, 16 R, 1/1 SB%,
and a 9:40 BB:K.
32/102 for .314/.358/.490 with 3 HR, 16 RBI, 22 R, 1/1 SB%,
and a 6:25 BB:K for AAA Tucson(PCL).

While Brito only turns 27 this November, his performance at Tucson should secure him AAA work for the rest of the decade. He also owns good defensive skills, however he failed to take advantage of a brief starting opportunity in July, continuing to struggle as Arizona first acquired Koyie Hill and then replaced the injured Hill with the surprisingly productive Chris Snyder. Of course, Brito's 3.36 G-F and questionable plate discipline indicates he shouldn't repeat his Tucson stats any time soon. As his respectable 3.90 #P/PA doesn't demonstrate sufficient upside to warrant employing him in any fantasy league, deal or cut him immediately even if desperate for cheap catching talent. Without any guarantee he even can break a .200 average, Brito simply doesn't merit a roster spot.

We'll continue tomorrow with American League surplus pitchers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Voting for the 2004 Hank Aaron Awards ends Thursday night at 11:59PM(EDT). Head over to MLB.com to cast your vote for the best overall offensive performer in each league. While no one should argue with Bonds in the NL, we can't object to anyone voting for Melvin Mora, Vlad Guerrero, or Manny Ramirez in the AL. Mora looks like the strongest candidate and earns our vote, but both MVP candidate outfielders also merit serious consideration.
