Pitchers with 2 starts to deploy only in leagues that don't count qualitative stats:
Given our need for offense and Colorado's decision to keep him, adding Jeromy Burnitz while cutting Fullmer should give us a helpful boost. We expect to add a new first baseman at the end of the month when rosters expand.
SP(6)
Mulder, Pedro, Schilling, Vazquez, and Oswalt are the only easy picks, and then since we're good in wins and need ERA help, taking Randy over Wood makes sense, however we instead need Brown for cap reasons. Orlando Hudson, and Podsednik stays benched while we don't have the cap room to run Vernon Wells or Carl Crawford.

SP(6) With Mulder, Clemens, Penny, and Lieber doubling, taking Schilling and Santana to complete our staff offers us nice upside. Our extra cap space lets us deploy Manny for Craig Wilson while Hairston, Blalock, Uribe, Vernon Wells, and Lawton stay benched.

No starts: Pedro, Mussina, Vazquez, Schmidt, Oswalt, and Affeldt. We see no reason to run Hudson, however given our standing, we're going to risk Wood. Affeldt will complete our staff. Vernon Wells and Piazza head back to our lineup while Fullmer, Orlando Hudson, Crede, Cintron, and Pierre occupy our bench.

We're adding Mulder this week for his double while dumping Halladay.

Offensively, Estrada for LeCroy, Orlando Cabrera for Roberts, and Manny for Pujols keeps us under the cap. Alfonso Soriano, Orlando Hudson, Blalock, Vernon Wells, and Kearns stay seated.

With 8 moves left and our team needing a jolt, we're opting for the hottest shortstop in baseball, who also happens to head to Colorado this week. Nomar replaces Clayton in our lineup.
SP(6) While no doubles jump out at us this week among pitchers we don't own, we happily will run Clemens and Mulder. Schilling, Randy, Oswalt, and Santana offer the best W, IP, and K upside. Running either starter in the Schmidt/Clement or Sheets/Pavano matchups just seems wrong. Even with Colorado at home, our concerns about their offense lead us to deploy Estrada over CJ, not to mention add Nomar while releasing Clayton instead of Kaz Matsui. Bonds should sit twice this week, so he and Manny will head to our bench while Dunn and Miguel Cabrera join the lineup. Mike Young, Hank Blalock, both Kaz and Hideki Matsui, and Jason Bay stay benched.

Somewhat surprisingly, Orlando Cabrera won't gain much from moving to Fenway. However, he should improve in all quantitative categories save steals thanks to the superior lineup support. Doug Mientkiewicz should see an across-the-board bump for similar reasons, although his batting average should increase a few points. Twins' fans happily will note that Mientkiewicz's departure should mean an unquestioned everyday job for Justin Morneau at first base. Along with Mientkiewicz, Boston's pick-up of Dave Roberts essentially eviscerates the values of both Kevin Millar and Kevin Youkilis. Expect the three new acquisitions to play every day while Millar and Gabe Kapler enjoy platoon roles at best. Alex S. Gonzalez might be the biggest beneficiary of the four-team deal since Montreal doesn't appear ready to promote Maicier Izturis. Gonzalez should play every day and could earn $5-10 over the next two months hitting higher in the order in a friendlier stadium. Los Angeles followed their Florida deal by sending Roberts to Boston and then replacing him with Steve Finley. Unfortunately for Dodgers' fans, they failed to add both Randy and Charles Johnson, instead settling for Brent Mayne as Dave Ross' platoon partner. Mayne isn't a terrible acquisition, but giving up Koyie Hill to Arizona results in a starting job for Hill while leaving Los Angeles with no obvious long-term solution. Since they dumped close to $20M in 2005 contracts by moving Roberts, Tom Martin, Juan Encarnacion, Guillermo Mota, and Paul Lo Duca, I'd love to see Los Angeles grab Jason Kendall when Pittsburgh sends him through waivers. The Dodgers can afford to spend $20M on Kendall and Brad Penny next year thanks to inexpensive youngsters like Hee Choi, Edwin Jackson, Jayson Werth, and new reliever Yhency Brazoban. Rebuilding teams should target the latter two players as both could emerge into significant roles by next spring. Steve Finley should see his quantitative totals rise in Dodger Stadium, however his BA could plummet without the advantages of playing in Arizona. With Luis Gonzalez heading for season-ending surgery tomorrow, take a long look at whichever prospects the Diamondbacks' recall. Someone like Luis Terrero could win a permanent starting job, although I view most of their current upper-level outfielders as placeholders until Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin arrive some time next season. While I don't know why Arizona needed another starting prospect with Chris Snyder and Craig Ansman seemingly deserving of big league roster spots within a year, Hill possesses more upside and could own the Diamondbacks' starting job for the rest of the decade. Anyone who needs catching help should target him. We also want to credit Milton Bradley for selflessly moving to left field to accommodate Steve Finley. Bradley cited Dave Roberts' move to left field upon Bradley's acquisition by the Dodgers as a good example, again supporting the idea that Eric Wedge deserves blame for Bradley's departure from the Indians. The Dodgers' dump of Tom Martin to Atlanta significantly cuts his value, making him no more than respectable roster filler given his limited upside. Wilson Alvarez replaces Martin in Los Angeles' bullpen. Florida added two more pitchers, replacing Penny it the rotation with Ismael Valdez from San Diego and adding Rudy Seanez from Kansas City to add bullpen depth. As Valdez's situation remains very similar to his environment with the Padres, continue to view him as no more than a gamble only for teams desperate for wins. Seanez similarly deserves little consideration from roto teams. Justin Wayne shouldn't return to the Marlins until September barring injury. Ryan Bukvich, Shawn Camp, and Nate Field all look like potential candidates for Royals' saves until Jeremy Affedlt returns, although I doubt anyone will save more than a couple games. However, the key here is that Kansas City grabbed Abraham Nunez from Florida, a move I expected for a couple months, although I envisioned a trade for Scott Sullivan instead of Seanez. Nunez, David DeJesus, and Ruben Mateo should share starting jobs with Matt Stairs and Aaron Guiel over the rest of the season, but the three youngsters could earn regular playing time for the next few years. Right now Nunez seems very underrated and merits a pick-up by any rebuilding AL fantasy team. San Diego, despite very impressive seasons from both Dennis Tankersley and Justin Germano at AAA Portland, appear prepared to promote Sterling Hitchcock to replace Valdez. As Hitchcock could flail badly, wait for one of the youngsters before investing in the Padres' #5 starter as anything more than a $1 flyer in deep leagues. In perhaps the most balanced deal of the day, the White Sox dumped pending free agent Esteban Loaiza for Jose Contreras; the Yankees added enough cash to the trade to keep Contreras' salary around $6M for each of the next two years. I view this deal as an absolute steal for the Sox since Loaiza reportedly wanted a contract near the $27M/3 Freddy Garcia received. More importantly, Chicago locked up now controls Garcia, Mark Buehrle, Contreras, and Jon Garland through 2006 at a probable total cost near $24M, a fairly reasonable allocation for 800+ innings of above-average pitching each season. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, both pitchers appear likely to take a short-term hit here. Contreras' flyball problems led to an abundance of homers that negated an otherwise impressive skill set since he reunited with his family, which recently left Cuba. Moving to the Cell could lead to a 20% jump in his homer rate, rendering him very questionable over the balance of the season. The benefit Loaiza gains from moving to a friendlier pitching environment seems offset by switching to a significantly less effective defense. His White Sox teammates at least kept his hit rate relatively low, and while the Yankee bullpen will save some runs, Loaiza looks slightly less valuable today in his new situation. Fantasy owners should target all three shortstops, Nomar, Orlando Cabrera, and Alex S. Gonzalez, as well as Doug Mientkiewicz, Steve Finley, and Koyie Hill. Don't rush to add Dave Roberts unless you're desperate for a dozen steals, and possibly shop Ismael Valdez, Loaiza, and Contreras.
