Spring Training Battles: '04 NL East
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Florida Marlins: Considering the number of losses suffered by the Marlins this winter, they enter the season in surprisingly strong condition. I don't even see any obvious camp battles. Hee Choi replaces Lee at first base, Lowell returns to third full-time, Jeff Conine remains in left, and Miguel Cabrera replaces Juan Encarnacion in right field. The Marlins hope Ramon Castro finally will fulfill his potential by emerging as a solid starting catcher and Armando Benitez replaces Urbina and Looper at closer. With Beckett, Penny, Pavano, and Willis returning to the rotation, and Darren Oliver holding down the other rotation spot until A.J. Burnett fully recovers from last year's surgery, the entire team seems fairly set. Unfortunately, the publicity accrued by Florida last October leaves Choi as the only true sleeper at this time.

New York Mets: #5 starter; primary contenders: Scott Erickson, Aaron Heilman, Jeremy Griffiths, and Tyler Yates.

The Mets' right field job isn't a true competition since Karim Garcia and Shane Spencer make an excellent platoon. Roger Cedeno, Timo Perez, Jeff Duncan, and Raul Gonzalez theoretically are in a fight for a back-up job, but the logical scenario involves dealing Perez, likely releasing Cedeno if New York doesn't believes he'll rebound, and then keeping Duncan as the best defensive back-up for Cliff Floyd. Of course, Cedeno and Perez still could break camp with the Mets, but expecting either player to receive more than 200 at-bats looks like a mistake.

Realistically, the #5 starting job also doesn't particularly relevant. All recent reports indicate the Mets will pitch Tom Glavine, Steve Trachsel, and Al Leiter every five days. Jae Seo will start as often as possible, but the fifth starter might only see action in seven or eight games at the most by the end of May, and given the normal April weather in New York, a total of five starts doesn't appear unreasonable. We also have little faith in Erickson, and he appears the obvious favorite. If any of the youngsters wins the job, consider an endgame flyer, but I see no reason to target any of these pitchers right now.

Philadelphia Phillies: The acquisitions of Billy Wagner and Eric Milton, combined with the re-signing of Kevin Millwood, leaves only bullpen and bench battles. Chase Utley may deserve a starting spot at either second or third base, but unless David Bell, Placido Polanco, or Jimmy Rollins badly bombs, Utley easily could head back to the minors for another season of regular action at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Anyone drafting early in the spring should consider the following players sleepers since they likely will win significant roles but still aren't guaranteed starting jobs: Florida's Hee Choi.
