2003 Hitting: September NL Overachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Note: The beginning of most stat lines includes the following data: H/AB for BA/OBP/SLG.

Arizona: Luis Gonzalez, OF
170/564 for .301/.398/.532 with 26 HR, 103 RBI, 5/8 SB%,
and an 89:66 BB:K for Arizona.

Gonzalez turned 36 at the beginning of the month yet appears on track to nicely improve from last season in most statistical categories. His average bounced back over .300 thanks to increasing his contact rate from .85 to .88 as he remained healthy for the entire year and even continued stealing bases. Both his .94 G-F and 3.89 #P/PA ranks among the top three marks of his career, and he drove home over 100 runs for the fifth straight season. He remains Arizona's primary power threat, and as long as Gonzalez's skills continue to remain steady or improve even as he ages, feel free to acquire him whenever you need a significant offensive boost.

Previous Overachievers: April: Carlos Baerga, 2B; May: Chad Moeller; June: Matt Kata; July: Steve Finley; August: Alex Cintron.

We'll continue tomorrow with American League overachieving pitchers.

Today's Fantasy Rx: Some youngsters with intriguing potential barely have played this year yet could break camp in the majors and approach double-digit value in 2004. Among the active NL offensive prospects meeting that definition who should be available in many leagues for last-minute minimum FAAB bids are Atlanta CR Mike Hessman, Chicago OF Dave Kelton, Houston OF Jason Lane, Los Angeles C Koyie Hill, New York OF Matt Watson, Pittsburgh OF J.J. Davis, and San Diego 1B Todd Sears.
