2003 Hitting: August AL Overachievers
by Tim Polko

Today's Fantasy Rx

Note: The beginning of most stat lines includes the following data: H/AB for BA/OBP/SLG.

Anaheim: Adam Riggs, 1B/OF
11/38 for .289/.386/.632 with 3 HR, 4 RBI, 2/3 SB%,
and a 6:3 BB:K.
116/394 for .294/.354/.490 with 14 HR, 82 RBI, 59 R, 8/10 SB%,
and a 37:67 BB:K at AAA Salt Lake(PCL).

We've always seen consistent power and decent plate patience from Riggs, however the Dodgers only gave him one cup-of-coffee in four years at AAA Albuquerque thanks to inconsistent contact rates. While I don't see any obvious improvement in his minor league numbers, a stunning .16 walk rate and a .92 contact rate over a dozen games with Anaheim gives him impressive immediate upside. A limited sample size keeps our expectations low for Riggs, but he owns a track record that indicates he possesses the potential to emerge as a viable starter for the Angels over the rest of the season. Acquire Riggs if you need an offensive boost in AL-only leagues.

July Overachiever: Bengie Molina, C
Old stats: 94/333 for .282/.307/.447 with 11 HR, 53 RBI, 30 R, 1/1 SB%,
and a 11:27 BB:K.
Recommendation: wait.
Stats since recommendation: 19/69 for .275 with 3 HR, 17 RBI, 6 R, 0/1 SB%,
and a 2:2 BB:K.

Previous Overachievers: April: Brad Fullmer; May: Jeff DaVanon; June: Garrett Anderson.

We'll continue tomorrow with National League overachieving batters.

Today's Fantasy Rx: If your team remains in contention in any league that allows September expansion, use your roster expansion slot to support your weakest categories. Most owners likely should look to add a bat since solid offensive players can boost you quantitatively in four categories immediately, however if pitching is more important to you, look for skilled starters with good schedules. Several teams, particularly in the AL East and NL Central, face fairly relaxing opponents, and if you can snag a Yankee about to run the table against Detroit, Tampa, and Baltimore, or a Cub scheduled to oppose Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh, you might pick-up a few necessary wins.
