Seeing Ozzie Smith, Ryne Sandberg, and Jim McMahon turn a routine double play off a Shannon Elizabeth grounder to retire Elizabeth and Wade Boggs is one of the unique thrills that makes these games worth attending. While we didn't know three of last year's "celebrities", the only player completely unfamiliar to us this year was Ms. Jade, a rap star of mild acclaim. In her first at-bat, she missed so badly when swinging at Goose Gossage's first two offerings that Ernie Banks helped her swing and miss at three more pitches before they managed to barely foul the sixth. Gossage gamely kept serving up meatballs until she made contact, and apparently satisfied with the moral victory, Ms. Jade finally accepted her strikeout at that point. In her second at-bat, Saberhagen needed five pitches before she finally creamed a ball at third base. Andrew Firestone, in the game's best defensive play, snagged the smash to retire her a second time. The PA played a brief version of "I feel like chicken tonight" when Wade Boggs batted. Ian Ziering and Dean Cain, perhaps the least-known "TV stars" in the game, both went 2-for-2 while displaying good defense. The offense sputtered during the three innings Gossage pitched, managing only one run despite 6 hits. Comic Sarah Silverman took the mound in the fourth to an out-of-place comment involving her pitching and Jimmy Kimmel, Silverman's boyfriend, catching. She never found any rhythm, nearly walking Wade Boggs on four pitches before allowing five hits in six at-bats. While she retired Gary Carter and Amy Kyler to end the fourth, and Saberhagen allowed a two-run Rollie Fingers homer in the fifth, the game appeared over once Silverman departed.
In the top of the first, Sandberg sent a screaming liner at Wade Boggs, which Boggs caught with little difficulty. After the Sox batted, Jim McMahon crushed Jack McDowell's next pitch to the LF "foul pole". Adam Carolla made a great leaping catch to save a homer. However, Carolla couldn't catch the next two hits as Dave Winfield and Brian McKnight each swatted McDowell offerings nearly 300 feet. Andrew Firestone of ABC's "The Batchelor" led off the third inning. His fianceé Jennifer Schefft took the mound against him, and after a swinging strike and a couple of balls, got him to line to shortstop. With Jack McDowell back on the mound, Jimmy Kimmel then singled, took a lead off first base, and was tagged out by Bo Jackson on the hidden-ball trick. Ozzie Smith homered in the fourth inning. Trista Rehn of "The Bachelorette" then singled two pitches later, chasing McDowell from the game. Of course, after Amy Kyler allowed a Sandberg single and retired McMahon, McDowell then returned to pitch for a third time to finish the game.
To honor Chicago's traditional softball leagues, they used a 16" softball during the third inning. Neither Amy Kyler nor Jamie Foutch, the two members of the National Professional Fast-Pitch Softball League, managed a hit despite each batting twice. Last year, the visiting Brew Crew compiled 7 R, 12 H, and 0 E, while the home team Harvey Wallbangers registered 4 runs, 8 hits, and 1 error. This season, the visiting Go-Go Sox compile 7 R, 13 H, and 0 E, while the home team South-Side Hitmen scored 4 runs on 6 hits and 1 error. We certainly don't believe either game was fixed, but the identical scores and similar box scores are somewhat eerie. Enjoy the game tonight. Hopefully one team actually will win this year.
Also, for anyone interested in playing CDM's Mid-Season Fantasy Baseball contest, rosters are due tomorrow night at 9pm(CDT). If you plan to participate, please register a team immediately, and we'll provide our roster and general player advice here by early tomorrow evening.
