Only deploy in Fantasy Baseball and other leagues that don't count qualitative stats:
Mantei's injury leaves us scrambling, and as we simply need to find more saves, we're going to accept the cap hit in order to roster Eric Gagne(1430). He's easily the best 5x5 closer in baseball, he should continue performing at a high level, and he's more economical than Smoltz. Fortunately he's also a free agent, so we'll add him and reluctantly drop Wade Miller, since we already have 13 starters and don't see a need to keep our weakest pitcher. We also hope Mantei can come back and give us some flexibility in our bullpen.
SP(6) Three solid doubles and great starts from Brown and Prior leave us with only Oswalt as the logical sixth start as most of our other pitchers face solid opposition. Thomas will start at 1B over Durazo since we don't know how much the Athletics will use Durazo in NL parks. Matsui and Everett sit given the upside of Jose Hernandez at home and Aramis Ramirez's recent play, and then we'll sit Manny given his recent slump and our need to spend more on our pitching staff.

Like last year, we're playing one 2nd season and one Midseason team, and with 2nd season starting tomorrow, here's a breakdown of our roster choices. C: We'll keep Toby Hall given his breakout game this weekend and fantastic cap number. We don't trust Javy Lopez will maintain his performance, so we settled on Mike Lieberthal(650) as our second catcher. He's better than Jason Varitek for the same cost, and although we may switch to Benito Santiago in two months, Santiago slumps during the summer while Lieberthal improves. 1B: Aubrey Huff is a no-brainer, and since we're skipping both IRod and ARod in favor of inexpensive talent, we can afford both Todd Helton and Triple Crown candidate Carlos Delgado(1420). Erubiel Durazo remains a solid producer, so we'll go ahead and take 4 first baseman, along with likely running three of them at most times with Helton and Delgado in a semi-platoon depending on available cap room. 2B: Luis Castillo could start stealing, but we just don't like his stats right now. Soriano is a necessity, however an owner in one of our AL leagues pointed out that Bret Boone's numbers are similar to those of ARod, and since we agree his skills look solid, we'll take Boone as our second 2B. SS: Nomar's automatic, but we're not taking ARod since he doesn't appear cost-efficient right now, and although Renteria's been solid, he slumped through most of May. However both Rafael Furcal(970) and Orlando Cabrera are producing both power and speed, so we'll take them as our second and third shortstops. 3B: AL battting title contender Hank Blalock continues to crush the ball, but Aaron Boone isn't running, therefore drastically limiting his value thanks to his weak BA. Fortunately Aramis Ramirez is playing great, and since Mike Lowell(1190) likely will see even more RBI opportunities if Florida deals him, he looks like a solid 3rd choice at 3B. OF: The automatic selections are Preston Wilson, Austin Kearns, and Dave Roberts. We have some salary room and can't think of a better target than Albert Pujols(1750). Ken Griffey(820), Vernon Wells(750), and Corey Patterson(500) all look quite strong even if their skills are somewhat questionable. Lastly we need to add a speedster or two, and we're rostering Gary Sheffield(1380) and Juan Pierre(1080); Ichiro is rocking, but Pierre contributes similar numbers at a far better salary, and Sheffield costs less than Ichiro and produces significantly superior power numbers. SP: The 10 most valuable starters in consideration of their qualitative marks, strikeouts, and win potential, are Jason Schmidt, Mike Mussina, Kevin Brown, Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez, Matt Morris, Mark Mulder(1080), Mark Prior, Kevin Millwood, and Kerry Wood. Hudson and Halladay both rank at the top of the LPR list for most dominant starts and least disasters, and after he toasted the Cubs yesterday, Oswalt again appears a must-own here. We also plan to add Randy once he's healthy but see no reason to roster him now. RP: Despite the reduced salary cap of 28000, we see Eric Gagne as a necessity, and we also continue to support Tim Worrell. Although Scott Williamson remains a solid option, we prefer Joe Borowski(750) and Rocky Biddle(750) given the respective success of each team and their superior salaries.
Morris, Mulder, Millwood, and Schmidt all see solid doubles, and Brown and Prior own excellent home starts. Durazo sits in the NL parks, and we don't quite see the cap room for Lowell or Sheffield since both are in minor slumps and face strong opposition. Corey Patterson also will sit since we have cap room to run both Helton and Delgado. Lastly, while both Furcal and Pierre aren't likely to run against strong catchers, Furcal faces much weaker pitching than Pierre and therefore should contribute more in other categories.

As we need to bench Mantei here and critically need more saves, we'll add Gagne, reserve Mantei for now, and drop Wade Miller.
SP(6) No starts: Randy, Pedro, K.Wood, and Halladay. Oswalt, Brown, and Prior are obvious calls here, and Schmidt and Ainsworth face the weakest opposition of the remaining starters. Morris is hotter than Millwood and Escobar is weaker than Moyer, so we're going to risk Morris against Toronto's offense. All four of our shortstops look like good plays, and Aaron Boone's slump suggests he should sit. We'll bench Durazo since Oakland can't use a DH in the NL, and Manny and Matsui round out our bench since neither player looks particularly strong right now.

We're dropping Mantei here outright, and while we like Biddle, Lance Carter, and even Williamson as replacements, Tim Worrell(1370) offers the best combination of point upside and salary.
SP(6) Millwood, Schmidt, Brown, Prior, and Oswalt are easy calls, and Halladay looks stronger right now than Mussina. Marrero, Ellis, Hinske, and Matsui stay benched due to either injury or performance concerns, and Josh Phelps sits since we doubt he'll see much playing time this week. Neither Burrell nor Manny look like particularly strong plays, and then while we really like Orlando Cabrera, we'll take Jose Hernandez's 7 games, including a great six game homestand, over Cabrera in Montreal.
