by Tim Polko 10:30PM Update: Jason Giambi will likely miss a couple of games this week with back problems, so we've pulled him from all our rosters, adjusting the printed rosters below, though not the commentary.
7 Home games
7 games Boston: 1 Road at Baltimore; 3 Road at Chicago White Sox; 3 Home vs. Tampa Bay.
7 Road games Teams with six home games: Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, Texas, and Toronto.
5 Home games All other teams play six games with at least three on the road.
If Arizona does not clinch by tomorrow, then Randy will pitch Tuesday in St. Louis(Andy Benes); Schilling would potentiall pitch Wednesday in St. Louis(G.Stephenson) if they still haven't clinched after Tuesday. However unless the fail to win a game all week, we do not expect Randy to double although he might pitch out of the bullpen. Given the uncertainty of the Diamondbacks' rotation, we're not prone to running either pitcher.

We're out of buys after adding Joe Crede last week.
SP(6) With Isringhausen unlikely to pitch much, if at all, we'll stay with Williams, Guardado, Julio, and Stewart. After winning his 20th today, we don't expect Pedro to pitch again this year. We're also concerned about the uncertain starts for Randy and Schilling. Fortunately we have five intriguing potential double starts, and we're comfortable deploying Mussina, Zito, Wood, Oswalt, and Halladay, even if all of them might miss their second starts for various reasons. Only Zito's Tuesday start particularly worries us, and we're comfortable using him over Morris and Vazquez. Gagne will round out our rotation. The offense is more complicated, as we're already limited by the inability to start Larry Walker, Uribe, and Jeremy Giambi considering we don't expect much from them this week. Daryle Ward will only start three games at most this week with Houston facing three lefties, so we'd like to bench him, and we'd also like to sit the slumping Hillenbrand despite his nice schedule. So we'll deploy Ichiro to the OF over Drew. Our last decision is whether we want to deploy Jason Giambi and Hillenbrand, each playing seven games against weak opponents, over Konerko and Klesko, each playing six games but against strong teams. We'll stay with the first two since we'd prefer the extra games. This leaves us over 600 under the cap but we just don't see anywhere we're comfortable spending money.

We're out of buys after adding Crede last week.
SP(6) Since we also have the same five doubles here as in DC, we'll again deploy Mussina, Zito, Wood, Oswalt, Halladay, and Gagne. We'd love to pull Ward here, but we're again short on outfielders, suggesting picking up Crede over Wells was probably a bad idea. We're stuck with him in the lineup and 330 of cap room since we already need to keep Barrett, Je.Giambi, Hunter, and Drew benched, and we don't have either the lineup or cap room to just deploy Rollins or Ichiro, also both slumping, just to pull Ward. We'll stick with our lineup from last week.

Byung-Hyun Kim: 3 Road games at St. Louis; 1 Home game vs. Colorado. We don't expect Schilling to go before Friday and won't run Zito on the road, leaving us with six interesting starts and Gagne. Since we need as much offense as possible, we'll sit Clemens and Morris, deploying Randy, Mussina, Wood, Oswalt, Halladay, and Gagne since we also believe we might be stronger qualitatively in this alignment. Kim also stays benched for cap reasons. Obviously we want to run Sosa, Vlad, and Bonds, although this requires sitting Helton, Ichiro, Konerko, and Pierre in favor of Rollins, Ward, and Dunn. As we're comfortable with that tradeoff, Torii Hunter and Larry Walker also join the others on our bench.

After adding Jason Schmidt, we're now out of moves on both these teams.
SP(6) We only need one last pitcher after Mussina, Zito, Wood, Oswalt, and Gagne, so we'll see how much room we have left after setting our offense. Since we're not comfortable running any of the Rockies aside from Helton, and we also want to keep Jeremy Giambi, Torii Hunter, and Nick Johnson benched, we're not left with many options. Schmidt is our cheapest pitcher, and he still forces us to bench Bret Boone and J.D. Drew, while using Patterson. However, since we expect Patterson will play more than Hunter, and San Francisco might need that win to eliminate Houston or Los Angeles, we're comfortable using Schmidt as our 6th starter.

Roy Oswalt: Tue:MIL(W.Franklin); Sun:@SF(Ru.Ortiz) While we don't own Mussina or Wood here, El Duque and Odalis could both pitch twice, so we'll deploy them along with Zito, Halladay, Oswalt, and Gagne. Offensively, the only player we mildly mind sitting is Luis Castillo considering he'll steal a few bases to try to keep his SB crown, so we'll sit Adam Dunn for cap reasons in order to also deploy Ichiro instead of Spivey. Hall goes back into the lineup since he should play every day, leaving Pierzynski, Konerko, Hinske, Steve Cox, Jeremy Giambi, and Torii Hunter on the bench.

As this is likely our last regular Challenge article of the year barring a need for any playoff games after September 29th, I'd like to thank the regular readers of this feature. I hope both the schedule and two-start information, as well discussion of our teams, has helped anyone who participated this season. While we obviously don't expect to finish as high in the standings as we hoped, we're rather pleased with the overall performances of our teams this year, especially considering we'd only played the season-long Diamond Challenge game last year. If you have any suggestions on how to improve this feature for next year, please e-mail me with your ideas.
