Javier Vazquez: Wed:@PIT(K.Wells) We remain locked into Isringhausen, Kim, Guardado, and Williams as our relievers; we're considering moving in Koch for Izzy at some point, but we don't like Oakland's schedule this week. I'll be surprised if we bench Gagne at any point this year, and we're confident throwing all four of our double starts in Schilling, Morris, Hudson, and Russ Ortiz. We don't particularly like any of our expensive starters' schedules, so we'll just stay with Lawrence, especially since he goes against the weakest offense and the starter with probably the worst skills of our oppponents; we'll also be able to field more offense this week. Colorado's on the road, and while the struggles of players like Rollins and Ward are worrisome, we really don't prefer Uribe or Juan Pierre on the road. Unfortunately we're 200 over the cap with our pitchers set and four Rockies benched, so we'll deploy the red hot Larry Walker and bench Vlad, who's also on the road for one less game and has struggled to some extent when not in Montreal. We'll likely need to burn for someone to help with RBI in the next few weeks, but we have significant assets committed to pitchers with two starts over the next two weeks. We're running four of our eight most expensive pitchers this week and likely at least four of our nine most expensive pitchers next week, including the top salaries of Randy and Pedro. After we hopefully maintain our pitching standings through the All-Star break, we'll then attempt to pick up ground in the quantitative power categories when more teams have hopefully stopped making moves.

SP(6) Doubles from Schilling, Morris, and Garcia, along with inexpensive home starts from Lowe and Halladay round out our starters; Gagne remains active since he should grab a few more saves this week. With Kearns' demotion today, we'll take advantage of Jason Giambi's availability as a free agent to add a backup first baseman. He'll also start instead of Todd Helton. Larry Walker and Sosa stay on the bench with Helton, and since we have the cap room to start Juan Pierre instead of Piatt to boost our steals, we'll keep Piatt benched, leaving us only 10 short of the cap.

SP(6) No starts: Mussina, Wood, Oswalt, and Lawrence.
RP(4) We're comfortable with deploying Pedro, Clemens, Morris, Vazquez, and Gagne this week, but we have reservations about Randy and Schilling in Houston and Zito in Seattle. Since we need strikeouts, we'll deploy Schilling against the recently struggling Redding and sit Randy and Zito. Izzy will sit due to the uncertainty surrounding the Cardinals and our cap problems Removing the Rockies from the lineup and Vlad, we'll keep Sammy and 007 in the lineup at home for the power boost. Unfortunately this leaves us 880 over the cap, and since we don't want to burn a move, we'll change our minds, taking Zito instead of Schilling since he pitches in a more pitcher-friendly park. Now we only have to cut $420, and since Jimmy Rollins only has a .120 BA in the last week, albeit with a helpful three steals, we'll deploy Juan Uribe to bring us under the cap.

We have no relievers on the bench, so we'll stay with Smoltz, Isringhausen, Kim, and Guardado until further notice.
SP(6) Schilling, Morris, and Gagne are easy starts, as well as Pedro and Clemens. We'll also deploy Vazquez since we trust him in Pittsburgh more than Kerry in Comiskey. Now we need to address our offensive deficiencies, and while we're concerned about 2B and SS with Boone/Ortiz and Jimenez/Uribe platoons, we don't mind Boone and Jimenez this week. However we need an alternative to Aramis Ramirez at 3B, and we want a multi-talented OF to give us an option instead of Patterson and Ward every week. With Hall and Blalock rotting on our bench, we'll burn two of our seven remaining moves to add Mike Lowell and Torii Hunter to our roster, immediately deploying both of them and benching Adam and Corey; we'll release Hall and Blalock. Along with sitting all our Rockies on the road, and Ramirez and Patterson, we'll sit Cliff Floyd since he's still slumping and we can't afford him this week since we don't like Oswalt's start. These moves leaves us 290 over the cap, and we'll drop under by deploying Wood in lieu of Vazquez since Kerry should post comparable innings and strikeouts, and the White Sox may be slumping if they can't perform against Minnesota in their first meeting of the year.
